Studies interested in Legal Studies can pursue a B.S. degree in Legal Studies with a Pre-Law Concentration or add a certificate. The B.S. degree offers a wide range of civil and criminal law courses through which students learn legal analytic and problem solving, as well as critical reading, writing, communication, and research skills. The Legal Studies program with a Pre-Law Concentration provides a curriculum based upon the American Bar Association Core Skills and Values and prepares students for the rigors of the law school curriculum.
Program courses include Criminal Law, Real Estate Law, Probate Law, Civil Litigation, Alternative Dispute Resolution, Business Law, Workers’ Compensation, Ethics, Torts, and Family Law.
The following information pertains to those pursuing the 3+3 program in conjunction with the University of Maine School of Law:
Progression Policy for B.S. Legal Studies – Pre Law-3+3 Program
In order to remain enrolled and progress in the B.S. Legal Studies – Pre Law-3+3 program, a student must meet the following requirements:
- If students have less than a 2.0 GPA at the end of their first academic year, they will be required to establish a learning contract for the following semester (including a referral to the Center for Academic Service).
- Students must receive a “C” or better in all courses marked with a * on their curriculum sheet.
- All students must comply with the School of Legal Studies Code of Conduct.
- All students are required to complete a minimum of 121 semester hours while maintaining a 2.0 overall cumulative grade point average and a 2.0 overall in all their major courses.
- Students must complete a minimum of thirty (30) credit hours at Husson University prior to applying at the University of Maine School of Law. At least fifteen (15) credits must be earned in the School of Legal Studies.
- Students applying for the 3 + 3 program must have a cumulative average of 3.3 or better prior to applying at the University of Maine School of Law.
- Students must complete forty-five (45) credit hours at Husson University prior to enrolling at University of Maine School of Law.
- Application to this program is contingent upon Advisor approval and recommendation.
- Students who are accepted to the University of Maine School of Law 3 + 3 Program will attend Maine Law in their final year and will receive transfer credits for satisfactorily completed courses.
The following courses will be transferred to Husson University from the University of Maine School of Law if a grade of C or better is earned and will replace the courses listed in the 4th year of the 3 + 3 curriculum sheet:
- Civil Procedure LAW 613;
- Criminal Law LAW 605;
- Legal Writing I LAW 607;
- Property LAW 610;
- Constitutional Law LAW 620;
- Contracts LAW 603;
- Legal Writing II LAW 608;
- Torts LAW 611.
At the end of the first semester at Maine Law School, students must provide Husson University with an official transcript showing grades earned during that first term. A student who fails to comply with any of the above academic requirements for the B.S. Legal Studies-Pre-Law - 3+3 program, may be denied transfer credits and may no longer be eligible to participate in this accelerated program of study.
